Junior Sports

Our aim is to develop a love of sport that stays with pupils throughout their life.

Sport sits firmly at the heart of the curriculum within our busy, vibrant Junior School, providing our pupils with the opportunity to learn new skills, challenge themselves, work as a team and simply have fun.

From the youngest age, pupils are encouraged to engage in the broadest range of physical activities, from Hockey, Football and Netball to Cricket, Gymnastics, Rugby, Swimming and much more besides.

"School sport should be fun! Our aim is to develop a love of sport that stays with pupils throughout their life. In games lessons pupils from Years 3 to 6 are provided with the opportunity to play competitive matches in our major sports; Football, Hockey, Netball, Cricket and Tennis. Our aim is to ensure all pupils benefit from the opportunity to represent the school as part of team, creating an inclusive atmosphere and carefully ensuring that students are encouraged, supported and challenged. We are also mindful of providing the stretch and opportunity that enables pathways for excellence for the very many pupils who go onto play sport outside school."

Director of Sport, Mrs Sear

Our team of specialist PE teachers and coaches provide our pupils with expert coaching to develop their skills and build their understanding of the benefits of health and fitness.

Our inclusive approach to sport enables all pupils across the Junior School to participate in fixtures and competitive matches, via both our vibrant House system and as a member of one of our many school teams.

Sport Curriculum

Our inclusive approach to Sport-for-all ensures we support all abilities and interests.

At Cranford, we know that pupils benefit from a breadth of sporting opportunities and consistency in this offer. In order to provide this balance, pupils enjoy over 10 hours of PE and Games curriculum time and the chance to extend this every day with an optional additional hour of co-curricular or extra-curricular sport (before or after school).

Netball, football, hockey, cricket and tennis, pupils can elect what they would like to do each term. A can-do, positive, healthy approach – pupils are enthusiastic, if not bloodthirsty, on the pitch. ‘Cricket’s the best because you get to play it in the sun,’ apparently.

GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE

In Games lessons, we prepare our pupils for competitive fixtures within our major sports:

Pupils enjoy 8-12 fixtures each term and all children in Years 3-6 benefit from the opportunity to play for the school. Pupils are able to continue to play their favourite sports all year by attending our weekly after- or before-school Academy sessions in Football, Cricket, Hockey, Netball and Tennis. Led by our specialist PE teachers and external coaches, these sessions focus on skill development, game awareness and fun!

In PE lessons, which run alongside Games in the curriculum, pupils are provided with the opportunity to study a wider array of sports, from Gymnastics and Swimming to Squash, Badminton and everything in between.

Pupils also enjoy the opportunity to swim as part of their curriculum lessons and benefit from being taught by our expert, dedicated coaches. They also benefit from the use of excellent facilities across our 20-acre campus, including a heated, covered swimming pool, modern Sports Hall, large playing field and astro-turf.

The school clearly values the progress of each and every one of its pupils as much as success for the top teams.
